| Project Title: | Polyadenylation of stored messenger RNA during seed germination |
| Abstract of Project : | |
| Seed germination is a critical control point in the plant life cycle, demarcating the transition from the stage most impervious to that which is most susceptible to the environment. Thus, mechanisms that regulate germination are of great importance. Seeds accumulate non-polyadenylated mRNAs. For my Fulbright project, I hypothesize that polyadenylation of stored mRNAs is vital for seed development and germination. The polyadenylation status of Arabidopsis seed mRNAs will be monitored during the course of germination, in the presence/absence of inhibitors of transcription and polyadenylation. My research sits at the intersection of two vital but under-studied areas of plant biology, seed germination and post-transcriptional control of protein production. This work has potential for applications in crop and seed improvement. | |
